Because of its elevation, Wyoming has a relatively cool arid climate throughout the state. Average temperatures between June and August range between 45 - 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Summer nights are almost invariably cool, even though daytime readings may be quite high on occasion with the southern portion of the state being the warmest, year round. July and August are the warmest months around the ranch with highs between 85 and 90 degrees. Average winter low temperatures near the ranch at the coldest part of the day ranges between 10 and 20 degrees with the high temperatures at the warmest part of the day during the winter months being between 35 and 45 degrees.
Fiddleback Ranch consists of approximately 4,267 deeded acres together with 3,500 acres private lease, 6,360 acres state of Wyoming leases and 38,439 acres of the Thunder Basin Grazing Association. The ranch has a variety of terrain with nine miles of the Cheyenne River and eight miles of Antelope Creek. At an average elevation of 4,600 feet, the ranch has mild winters and warm summers providing year around grazing in sixteen pastures. Grasses consist of needle and thread, winter wheat grass, blue grama, green needle, Indian rice grass, blue stem and prairie sand reed. There are other drainages through different parts of the ranch including Horse Creek, Keyton Creek, Wagonhound Creek, Woody Creek and M Creek. Along with the natural water, the ranch has twenty six water wells which range in depth from 150-700 feet with over 35 miles of underground pipeline and 9 underground storage tanks from 12,000 to 64,000 gallons of storage which supply 68 large rubber tire tanks.
The improvements at the Fiddleback Ranch are modest yet practical for a year-round grass ranch. At the main headquarters on the east end, improvements consist of a 2,500 sq. ft. main house with 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, mobile home with 3 bedrooms and 1 3/4 baths, 5,400 sq. ft. shop/garage with partial concrete floor-heated, horse barn with tack room, two sheds, complete set of working corrals with loading chute and 80,000 lb. scales. Five miles west, at the historic headquarters, there is a classic set of buildings including a useable 1,088 sq. ft. log cabin, 2,400 sq. ft. barn and set of corrals with a 60,000 lb. scale.
Fiddleback Ranch is considered a low-overhead, year-round cow/calf grass ranch. Calving occurs outside in April and May with grazing all year along with supplemental protein feeding. The ranch maintains stored hay for possible winter blizzard feeding but has historically used very little hay forage. The ranch markets its calves on video, shipping October or November right off the cow weighing 500-540 lbs. Cows are Angus breed based and the ranch maintains 30-40 Angus/Simmental bulls plus a string of saddle horses.
The ranch has an assortment of wildlife including mule and whitetail deer, antelope and a resident elk herd. In addition, the ranch has wild turkeys, sage grouse and a host of other birds.
