California Hunting

Hunting in California is one of many amazing recreational opportunities that the state has to offer, and it’s more than on par with the sun, sand and surf that California’s famous for.  California is home to many ecological reserves, as well as state and federal wildlife areas that are great for hunting.  Many attractive hunting properties in California are located adjacent to these protected areas, which provide private landowners with well-managed herds to hunt.

Hunters can stalk a wide variety of big game in California such as, deer, bear, bighorn sheep, elk, wild pig, and antelope, along with small game like bobcat and coyote.  Upland game such as grouse and turkey can also be hunted in California along with waterfowl such as duck, geese, and pintail.  Hunting licenses are obtainable at most license agents and at Department of Fish and Game offices.  Hunting seasons run year round in California, with licensed seasons occurring in winter, spring, summer and fall.

California is the third largest state in the U.S., and as such, it offers an unrivaled diversity of terrain for hunters to enjoy. From the rolling Mediterranean hills and valleys of the coast, to the beauty of the high mountains and plains, California is the place to purchase a ranch for hunting.  For example, the lush green steeps of Monterey County are home to attractive hunting ranches.  Or perhaps 85 acres of meadows and nicely timbered land with beautiful Pines and Oaks in the scenic Big Valley of northeastern California is the right hunting property for you.

Purchasing a hunting ranch in California is always a prudent business decision.  When you own your own California hunting ranch, you avoid the growing tension of trying to find productive public hunting land.  Moreover, your hunting property becomes a home away from home that you intimately know. Owners quickly learn the migration paths of mule deer on their property and the year-round rhythms of how water in the creek behaves.  Apart for the enjoyment and satisfaction of owning a productive hunting property, you can also enjoy a steady income from individuals and guide operations seeking leased access to good hunting grounds.

Another advantage to owning a California hunting ranch can be found in the California Department of Fish and Game’s Private Lands Management (PLM) program created in 1979 to address the loss of wildlife habitat.  This program offers landowners economic incentives to manage their lands for the benefit of wildlife. Landowners who enroll in this program consult with biologists to make sound habitat improvements that benefit wildlife, such as providing water sources, planting native plants for food, and making brush piles for cover. In return for these improvements, landowners can charge fees for wildlife viewing, hunting and fishing. This partnership between wildlife managers and private landowners helps conserve and maintain wildlife habitat in California while providing landowners incentives, such as expanded hunting season dates and bag limits, to maintain the health of the herds and land for future generations to enjoy.
