Location:
Specie Wilderness Ranch is situated in a private basin with level to rolling mountain meadows, aspen groves and spruce with elevation ranges from 9,300 to 9,600. The resort town of Telluride is approximately 100 highway miles northeast of the Four Corners in a dramatic box canyon in the San Juan Range of the Rocky Mountains in southwestern Colorado. Specie Wilderness Ranch is in an agricultural basin 22 miles west of the town of Telluride via Specie Mesa Road off of HWY 145. A mile-long private, gravel road off of Specie Mesa Road leads to the ranch gate. Private and commercial air service is available in Telluride and dependable year-round service is available at the Montrose Regional Airport, which offers a 10,000 foot commercial and private jet runway within an hour of the ranch. Grand Junction, the largest city on the western slope is 50 miles northwest of Montrose. Specie Wilderness Ranch offers seclusion with all the amenities of Telluride including world class skiing, golf, fishing, fine dining and the arts.
Area and Climate:
One of the few remaining large private holdings within 30 minutes of Telluride, Specie Wilderness Ranch offers huge panoramic views of 13,000 and 14,000 foot peaks and shares over a mile of boundary line with the Uncompahgre National Forest, providing wilderness access and protection from future development. The area has retained a predominantly agricultural feel with the surrounding properties a mixture of ranches and recreational properties. Several excellent home sites offer commanding views of the Telluride peaks and the Wilson Range. In the world famous mountain town of Telluride you'll find the magnificent and breathtaking San Juan Mountains offering exhilarating natural beauty, an abundance of winter and summer activities and festivals, and charming downtown dining and boutiques. The mid-day temperatures during the summer season are typically in the 70s.
Wildlife and Water Resources:
Wildlife populations abound on and around Specie Wilderness Ranch including a large resident elk herd. The ranch offers excellent hunting or viewing for elk, mule deer, black bear, mountain lions, grouse, and turkey. The pine and aspen forests provide excellent shelter and habitat for the prolific wildlife. There is an opportunity to expand the personal or commercial hunting potential.
Specie Creek and Painter Creek traverse the property and two domestic wells producing 30 GPM have been completed near several ideal home sites.
Recreation:
With 13,000 and 14,000 foot peaks in every direction, spectacular views and recreational opportunities abound. The fall and summer seasons offer great hiking, camping, and horseback riding. Winter activities include world-class skiing and golf at Telluride Mountain, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing on the property.
