Location:
Elk Park Ranch is located in Park County, Colorado. Park County is the geographical most central county in the state. It is in the southwest corner of a 900 square mile park called South Park. The ranch is located about 22 miles southeast of Hartsel, or 40 miles to Fairplay, or 55 miles from Breckenridge, 76 miles from Colorado Springs or 28 miles from Salida.

Area and History:
Park County was established in 1861 and is geographically in the center of Colorado. Of the county’s total landmass 51% is in Federal Lands, 8% is owned by the state of Colorado and 41% is privately owned. The county has 5 large water storage reservoirs that have become important wildlife and aquatic recreational areas. Within the county borders are portions of three wilderness areas, two state parks and 12 state wildlife areas.

The South Platte River flows through the county and the 900 square mile park named by early fur traders and trappers as South Park. Gold was discovered in the South Platte River of South Park in 1859 causing a “Gold Rush” to the area, and the establishment of the town of Fairplay. Fairplay is the county seat of Park County and is known as the “Fly-Fishing Capital of Colorado”.

The county’s perimeter is defined by several well-known mountain ranges that include four of Colorado’s peaks higher than 14,000 feet as well as 25 named summits above 13,000 feet.   Park County has more territory above 9,000 feet in elevation than any other Colorado county.

The ranch is composed of 3,647 acres of which 1,923.33 acres are deeded. The balance of the acreage comes from a 955 acre lease with the State of Colorado, 610 acre lease with the Bureau of Land Management and a lease of 159 acres with a private land owner.
