WSJ online/Candace Taylor – Aussie founder Tom Redmond selling CO Ranch for $54.7M:
Owned by Tom Redmond, founder of the Aussie brand of hair care products, the ranch has about 55,486 deeded acres.
Listing agent Ron Morris of Ranch Marketing Associates said the ranch is one of the largest pieces of property for sale in the state. Located on the eastern side of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, under a two-hour drive from Colorado Springs, the ranch is about 15 miles long and 7 miles wide, Mr. Morris said.
Known as Wolf Springs Ranch, the property is owned by Tom Redmond, founder of the Aussie brand of hair-care products, which is now owned by Procter & Gamble.
Mr. Redmond, now in his 80s, said that as a child he was “always enthralled by the West,” especially stories of frontiersman Kit Carson. “I believe in reincarnation,” he said. “I think I was either Kit Carson or his horse.”
He bought the first portion of the ranch in 1990, he said, adding to it over the years. Mr. Redmond raised buffalo, cattle and horses, and said he worked to protect the elk, deer, antelope and other wildlife. The ranch currently has about 400 cattle, he said, as well as a herd of about 500 buffalo and 30 horses. The animals and equipment are available for sale, but aren’t included in the asking price.
The property has a roughly 4,100-square-foot, six-bedroom house and several other houses. There is a ranch headquarters with an indoor arena, as well as two outdoor arenas, barns, hay sheds and other facilities.
Mr. Redmond said he is selling the ranch because he doesn’t go there much anymore. He has homes in Minnesota, Arizona and California. “I would like to sell it to someone who has a similar vision to my own, who will keep it like it is, and protect the animals and the environment,” he added.
